The construction of a singing instrument has fascinated Gideon and Mira from the very beginning and brought them to Cremona at a young age. It’s their common starting point on a path that took them to very different places and experiences and eventually reunited them on this quest after many years. While Mira finished her diploma at the Scuola di Liuteria, Gideon completed his education at the Mittenwald school. Mira spent several years with Isabelle Wilbaux in Montreal discovering the world of new making. Gideon, on the other hand, focused on restoration of old Italians in different workshops in Germany and London. When they reunited in Montreal, they decided very naturally to put all their skills together and commit themselves entirely to making new instruments.
Mira and Gideon now live in Berlin with their two children. They participate in exhibitions and workshops in Europe and North America. The quality of their work has been recognized with several international awards.
For a while we made instruments next to each other, learned from one another’s particular experiences and soon realized how complementary our skills were. We then started developing a way of working together on each instrument that leaves our workshop. Our instruments are planned by two brains and realized by four hands. We both have areas in which we excel: Mira, cellist, has a magic eye for the sculpture of archings and scrolls. Gideon, violinist and violist, adores the play of colors and effects in varnish and its antiquing-process.
The infinite complexity of the sound and the possibilities to sculpture it by changing any given detail in the construction process is a great source of motivation for both of us. In everything we do, we strive for the best tonal results possible. We always aim as high as we possibly can, as we have learned that the best musicians often are the best partner to work with. To us the finished instrument represents a starting point that we enjoy to develop together with its player.
