Francis Kuttner

From 1974 to 1978 Francis Kuttner studied violinmaking with Giobatta Morassi and Francesco Bissolotti at the Scuola Internazionale di Liuteria in Cremona,Italy. He returned to San Francisco in 1978, and has been making violins, violas and cellos full-time ever since.

“I like a bold look. Perhaps this is reflected in the sound of the instrument.
Choice of wood, full archings, powerful f-holes and relative flexibility in the
plates and rib assembly are paramount to the outcome. Edge work, inlay and final
gouging are done ‘a la cassa chiusa’, when the instrument is fully glued.
I coat my violins with varnish that I cook either in my garden in San Francisco or on
my terrace in Cremona.”
